Talks from Culture Unraveled

Our talks explore the deeper themes that are embedded in our culture. We look into how aspects of our culture radically affect the way we look at the world. At Culture Unraveled we take the Bible seriously and believe that it’s wisdom is paramount in the world we live in. Our approach correlates the insights from the Christian revelation with the existential issues raised by culture. Here are some topics as examples

The cultural examples will vary according to the setting and this can be done is discussion with the host. The cultural pieces can be chosen according to what the group is most familiar with.

A Leap into Faith

Here we explore movies like Signs, Prisoners, Hacksaw Ridge and others where the element of faith is beautifully revealed in and through the main characters of the movie. We use these cultural elements as a way to show that we all ultimately have to put our faith in something beyond ourselves.

Standing for Truth

Here we can explore characters like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and many others who stood for the truth, no matter what the cost. We also look into novels like Brothers Karamazov or movies like Nayattu to bring out the importance for holding to the truth. We finally look into the words of Christ where Jesus says, “I am the way and the Truth and the Life”

Dealing with Suffering

Movies like Silence, God on Trial, The Shawshank Redemption and many others deal with the concept of suffering. Is there a purpose behind suffering? If God is good why would He allow people to suffer? Through this talk we look into some ways of understanding and dealing with suffering and how the Christian hope offers a unique answer to the question of human suffering.

Biblical Basis for Engaging with Culture

Here we look at the overall vision of scripture and set the biblical mandate for why we need to engage with culture. We look into the Gospels, Paul’s engagement with his culture along with how the Israelites engaged with their own culture and as well as those around. We will also look into a few theological methods, especially Paul Tillich’s method of correlation.

Ways and Methods to Engage with Culture

Here we will look into some of the well-known methods for engaging with culture. It will include a small assignment through which the group can gain valuable skills. We will primarily be using Kevin Vanhoozer’s everyday theology as a framework for cultural and biblical engagement.

Engaging with Contemporary Issues

In this session, we will look into some of the key issues facing our culture today. Issues like Identity, Freedom, Sexuality, Mental Health, Society and Environment. Each of these topics can be done as separate sessions which gives ample time for discussions, Q&A’s and presentation.

Workshops by Culture Unraveled

Our workshops include various resource persons who specialise on different topics. The workshops combine different areas together according to the needs of the hosts. The topics are primarily meant to equip the group so that they can engage intelligibly with the different cultural mediums such as movies, music, paintings, current events and social media. Here are a few examples of the topics for the workshop

The cultural examples will vary according to the setting and this can be done is discussion with the host. The cultural pieces can be chosen according to what the group is most familiar with.
