The Master explores the relationship between Freddie Quell and Lancaster Dodd. Freddie is an alcoholic and a recluse while Lancaster is a self-proclaimed leader. The uneven power dynamic makes it impossible to sustain the friendship. The movie shows that this warped sense of power has to be broken in order for the relationship to be genuine.
