Amal Neerad’s Varathan , follows the journey of Abin and his wife Priya, who shift from Dubai to their family estate, in the high ranges of Kerala. The film foreshadows a drastic change for its protagonist Abin. A Bible quote about rebuilding walls precedes the story, while Abin himself is initially portrayed as tolerant and easygoing. Setting boundaries, building walls, locking up gates are the exact opposite of what he might do naturally, but that’s exactly what he does at the end of the movie. Karl Popper wrote about the paradox of tolerance … Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.” Paraphrasing GK Chesterton, Do not remove a fence until you know why it was put up in the first place.
